How to Find a Therapist

FINDING AND CLICKING WITH A THERAPIST IS IMPORTANT.  USING WEB SEARCHES, YOUR INSURANCE LISTS, PSYCHOLOGY TODAY, AND WORD OF MOUTH ALL WORK.  BUT WHAT WORKS FOR ONE PERSON, DOESN'T NECESSARILY WORK FOR ANOTHER.  I HIGHLY RECOMMEND USING THE FIRST PHONE CONTACT TO GET A SENSE OF THE THERAPIST.  HAVE A LIST OF QUESTIONS READY.  SEE HOW THEY ANSWER, IF THEY GIVE YOU PLENTY OF TIME (5-15 MINUTES ON AVERAGE).  DO YOU LIKE WHAT THEY HAVE TO SAY?  DO THEY RETURN THE CALL PROMPTLY?

WHEN YOU DO SCHEDULE THE FIRST MEETING, IT IS A CONTINUATION OF THIS PROCESS.  YOU AS A CLIENT NEED TO FEEL COMFORTABLE EITHER RIGHT AWAY OR HAVE SOME SENSE IT WILL BECOME COMFORTABLE OVER TIME, MAYBE BECAUSE THERAPY IS UPSETTING TO YOU IN GENERAL.  THE THERAPIST SHOULD WORK WITH YOU TO ESTABLISH SOME GROUND RULES AND POSSIBLY TALK ABOUT YOUR DIRECTION AND GOALS FOR THERAPY.  SOMETIMES, THE THERAPIST WILL NOT ALIGN WITH YOUR WANTS AND WILL REFER YOU TO SOMEONE BETTER SUITED.  THIS IS NORMAL, HAPPENS FAIRLY FREQUENTLY AND IS NOT A PERSONAL REJECTION!  IT IS ETHICAL AND COMPASSIONATE THING FOR THE THERAPIST TO DO, IF YOUR NEEDS AND THE THERAPIST SPECIALTY AND EXPERIENCE DO NOT MATCH UP.

A VERY COMMON EXPERIENCE FOR CLIENTS OCCURS 2-4 MONTHS INTO SESSIONS.  THE LULL, THE DIP, THE HARD PLACE.  EITHER IT GETS TOO EASY OR TOO HARD.  THE CLIENT OFTEN WANTS TO QUIT AT THIS POINT.  TRY NOT TO! STICK IT OUT.  THIS SHIFT MEANS SOMETHING GOOD AND RIPE IS HAPPENING IN THE PROCESS.  COMMIT TO AT LEAST A YEAR.  YOU MAY BE SURPRISED WHAT CAN HAPPEN.  OF COURSE, IF YOU ARE LUCKY ENOUGH TO HAVE INSURANCE OR CAN AFFORD IT, THERAPY IS A HEALTHY LUXURY THAT YOU CAN KEEP UP OR KEEP COMING BACK TO.
